The night had a late start due to bad traffic caused by a truck accident on the Schuylkill. Several of the artists were delayed including the first DJ set performer, Pocaille, who drove all day from Montreal, Canada. Fortunately the delay wasn’t too bad and the festival started with some chill beats from a set up just infront of the stage on the floor of the First Unitarian Church.

Storm Blooper played on the floor as well with SBThree doing visuals right next to him. There was a problem with the sound, or the power, or both so SBThree started to hand out Runts candy and party favors such as clappers to entertain the audience. The sound issues were quickly resolved and the party got started. Storm Blooper bounced around between his 4 game boys with the GoPro on his head pointed out towards the audience. SBThree kept the fun coming and threw glow sticks out into the crowd. They became colorful bracelets, necklaces and earpieces. The toys didn’t stop there- this was just the start of what was to come… Next they gave the audience a giant inflated pizza slice and Nintendo controller which delighted the crowd as it floated around. But they didn’t stop there! It started to rain play money and it was the perfect start to the third 8static Festival.

Little Paw took the stage next and announced the release of his album Space Corgi inspired by his dog, Eleanor. I’ve been following her instagram account since she was a puppy and her cuteness knows no limits. Ohhinaifu’s visuals perfectly embodied Eleanor’s Lisa Frank aesthetic.

Founder of the 8static series, NO CARRIER, took the stage to introduce Baron Knoxburry. He nonchalantly read from a piece of crumpled notebook paper, “Please welcome his grace, the first and last of his name, king of the annals and them missing links of sausage, defender of trolls, lord megabeard of the seven vomits, I love you thee Baron of Knoxburry!” Baron Knoxburry walked on stage singing a a jovial tune and Emily made the inflatable pizza dance on stage alongside him. His set was silly in the best possible Muppets-on-acid way. Not taking himself seriously his songs included lyrics like “bla bla bla” a ukulele and horn side effects. His beard’s ever-growing tail reached well past his belt and swung around stage as he bopped around.

L-Tron’s set was a burst of purse energy from the start. The 8static crowd rushed to the stage and started dancing to his beats. By the end of his set the half the audience jumped on stage dancing along to his last few songs and taking selfies.

Ap0c is the only chip-artist to use a tuba as far as I know. His instrument combined with a Nintendo and drummer, Kev Ragone made for a crazy combination. You may have seen Kev drum for Cheap Dinosaurs in the past and this was the first time he played as part of Ap0c’s performance. The music got faster and faster. The only way I can describe it was thrashing although I have no idea how it’s possible to do that with a tuba.

8static is one of the last stops of Mega Ran’s tour. I’ve had the honor of photographing him three times on this particular run. First at I/O Chip Music in NYC, then in Manchester, England at Superbyte and now in Philadelphia. His performances were always personalized to the location and crows which was to his credit as an artist. His friend “IQ” joined on stage for a few songs followed by a surprise performance of “OP” with NYC chip artist, Iron Curtain. He ended his set with a freestyle in which he spontaneously raps about items the audience gives him. It’s always fun and entertaining!

Next up was Philadelphia’s own Chipocrite who played with drummer Josh Steingard. Chipocrite is known to have mind-blowing live performances and they upped the ante with their level of skill and talent giving an unforgettable performance.

Overrake closed the night with his dancy beats. Bud Melvin and Be Leo joined on stage and the audience grooved past the stroke of 12. A couple snuggled up on the inflatable pizza slice towards the back of the venue and the first night of 8static was done.
